MySpace Trawl – Laura Veirs

January 30, 2010 |16:37 | News  By : Team X

With the power of the internet, you can produce a ropey dubstep track in your bedroom and get it heard across the continent just a few weeks later thanks to P2P networks. But do people make music for pleasure, or to become mega famous? With the rise of shows like X Factor, more people see the glamour.

You could get funny looks when asked if you’d consider just plodding along releasing records that you enjoy making. After all, if you’re not selling out arenas after five years, shouldn’t you give up? If you vaguely care, then of course not.

Laura Veirs has been performing music in various forms since 1999. She clearly enjoys what she does and is still going strong with a new release around the corner. In the coming weeks, the seventh album by Laura Veirs will hit various outlets. She’s been gigging and recording since 1999, so that is an incredible output by anyone’s standards. Portishead chewed the fat for a decade as they recorded their third album called, erm, Third. Let’s hope two years wasn’t wasted on the title.

Everything on her MySpace player perfectly displays what Laura Veirs is all about. An almost homely quality is delivered with music that doesn’t overpower you – it’s totally uncomplicated. Combining bits and bobs from indie to folk rock, her poetic lyrics fly over you and don’t leave you scratching your head as you try to guess the deep lyrical meaning weaved into the song.
