Justin enjoys Myspace thrill

Posted in : News

(added few months ago!)

Justin Timberlake has been talking about his decision to get his own social network, saying music has an exciting future on the internet.

It is a case of life imitating art as the co-star of The Social Network - the Oscar-winning film about Facebook - buys into Myspace. Timberlake, along with the advertising agency Specific Media, wants to revitalise the brand, and he told Sky News he was looking forward to the challenge. "It's an exciting place for the future of music. Although it seemed like such a taboo thing the internet and music - I don't think it's taboo at all.

"You make music because you want a lot of people to hear it and the fact that that could happen at a quicker pace is very, very exciting."Music also dominates other social networking sites. On Twitter, artists send around 200 million tweets per day. Lady Gaga tops the list with 13 million followers, even beating President Barack Obama. But Beyonce broke all records on the site. Some 8,868 tweets per second were sent when she announced she was pregnant at the MTV VMAs.

Jeremy Silver, the chairman of Semetric, which analyses data for the entertainment industry, told Sky News artists are using social media as a real tool in promoting themselves. "They're learning how to use it most effectively and that means in terms of how they communicate out, but also how they read what information is coming back. "There's a saying at the moment in the music industry that data is the new oil."

Another Kick in the Face for MySpace: Facebook Moves Into the Music Biz

Posted in : News

(added few months ago!)

When Facebook nudged MySpace out as the social-media leader, it left the latter site with one strong suit: music. Indeed, as recently as this week, Al Dejewski, MySpace's senior vice president of global marketing, informed AdAge that the site will increase its focus on music -- attempting to compete with iTunes and Spotifys of the world, even bringing on Justin Timberlake with an office and a staff of six

Well if MySpace wants to enter business against Spotify and Pandora, it may have a problem. Now it appears Facebook wants to go into business with those services.

Mark Zuckerberg's company sent out invites Thursday to its annual developer conference, to be held Sept. 22 in San Francisco. It's promised that there will be new product announcements, leading bloggers to speculate about what those might be.

Near the top of the list is a music dashboard, potentially featuring services like Spotify, Pandora and Last.fm. The idea is that users would be able to stream music, share it and see what friends are listening to as well.

Considering Spotify's recent U.S. launch and Pandora's good-but-not-great earnings report Thursday, this could give a big boost to both companies if sales for their subscriptions services increase Yet the real winner may be the music industry, which could earn another avenue for selling songs. Then there is Facebook itself. The more initiatives like this, the more it becomes a dominant marketplace for goods of all sorts and the more ad revenue trickles in.

How does this all compare to MySpace's plan?

There are no specifics yet, just a rash of stories about MySpace seeking to become a "destination" for music. Having Timberlake aboard should help, as could any number of other famous endorsements. However, wouldn't a major Facebook music initative trump anything MySpace can offer? It seems like this is the new social media titan ensuring its progenitor can't get up off the mat.

Facebook, Myspace Increase Teen Substance Abuse Risk

Posted in : News

(added few months ago!)

Substance abuse is a bigger problem for adolescents who daily spend time on social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace, as 70% of American adolescents say they do, according to a survey released Aug. 24 by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University.

Of those adolescents, 26% reported drinking alcohol, 10% reported using tobacco, and 13% reported using marijuana. The numbers are much lower for adolescents who do not frequent these sites: 9% for alcohol, 2% for tobacco, and 7% for marijuana.

In addition, adolescents who had seen photos on social networking sites of children and adolescents who were drunk, passed out, or using drugs had a greater likelihood of substance abuse and were more likely to have easy access to alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drugs without a prescription.

CASA Columbia randomly selected households and surveyed more than 2,000 adolescents aged 12-17 years – and about 500 of their parents – over the telephone and the Internet. CASA conducted this 16th annual national survey during March-May 2011, not to determine the percentage of teens who smoke, drink, and use drugs, but rather to identify factors that affect the likelihood of substance abuse.

"We’re not talking about causation here. We’re talking about association," the center’s founder and chairman, Joseph A. Califano, Jr. said at a press conference in Washington announcing the results. "We think it would be an important healthy factor for these pictures not to be on social networking sites."

The CASA report also included several findings about cyber bullying, which often occurs through social networking:

• Nineteen percent of adolescents said they had been the target of "mean or embarrassing" posts online;

• Twenty-five percent of girls have been "cyberbullied," compared with 14% of boys;

• Adolescents who have been cyberbullied are more than twice as likely to have used tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana as are those who have not been cyberbullied, and they are almost twice as likely to say that they are likely to try drugs in the future.

The CASA survey results also showed that almost one-third of adolescents watch "suggestive teen programming," such as "Gossip Girl," or "16 and Pregnant," or "Skins," and they were twice as likely to have used tobacco and almost twice as likely to have used alcohol as were teens who did not watch these shows. Easier access to these substances also was associated with watching these shows.

Dr. John R. Knight, a pediatrician who directs the Center for Adolescent Substance Abuse Research at Children’s Hospital Boston, said in an interview that he was not surprised by the survey results. "The only thing that’s surprising to me is that the media companies haven’t done anything about it," he said.

On MTV’s "Jersey Shore," a reality show mentioned in the survey, young adults regularly consume excessive amounts of alcohol. Dr. Knight said he turned on the show one time and was "appalled."

Multiple studies have confirmed that the likelihood of substance abuse by teenagers increases when they are exposed to mass media that show tobacco, alcohol, and illegal drugs in a positive or glamorous light. And in the 1990s, the medical community fought to oust the cartoon character Joe Camel from cigarette advertisements, because it appeared to target children.

But online social networking is a relatively new phenomenon – and one that has helped teens overcome addictions by connecting them with online support groups. "Social networking is a two-edged sword," said Dr. Knight, who was not affiliated with the CASA report. "It can be destructive, but it also helps young people in recovery from substance abuse."

Of parents surveyed, 89% did not think social networking sites increased the likelihood of drug use for teens, and 87% thought the same about alcohol.

Lisa J. Merlo, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist with expertise in this area, said in an interview that it is important to ask adolescents about the amount of time they spend on social networking sites. Dr. Merlo of the University of Florida, Gainesville, who was not affiliated with the CASA report, also advised talking to parents about the importance of monitoring teens’ online activity – which 64% of parents in the survey said they do.

The report noted that teens who eat dinner with their families five to seven times a week do not have as high a risk for substance abuse as do those teens who have infrequent family dinners.

Mr. Califano reprimanded social networking sites for allowing the display of pictures of children and teens drunk, passed out, or using drugs. "We think it would be an important healthy factor for these pictures not to be on social networking sites. ... Continuing to provide the electronic vehicle for transmitting such images constitutes electronic child abuse," he said in a statement accompanying the survey report.

Advances in neuroscience and longitudinal studies show that exposure to alcohol, tobacco, and drugs at a young age leads to greater chances for permanent neurotoxic damage and psychological disorders later in life, Dr. Knight said.

"The data are shouting at us," he said. "We must protect these young people."Knowledge Networks administered the Internet component of the survey, which 546 male teens and 491 female teens, along with 528 of their parents, completed. QEV Analytics conducted the telephone component, which 478 male teens and 528 female teens completed. CASA required parental or guardian consent for interviewing the adolescents, which was refused in 13.6% of eligible households.

Both components of the survey asked teens whether anyone could see or overhear their responses, but this did not appear to have an inhibiting impact on their answers. The findings note that confidentiality agreements, self-reporting, and the parental permission requirement might contribute to underreporting of substance abuse.

Google+ chases Myspace, Twitter & LinkedIn

Posted in : News

(added few months ago!)

Google+ is well-positioned to become the second-largest social networking site in the US within the next 12 months, according to research carried out by Bloomberg/YouGov. With some 16 million online adults planning to join the platform over the next year it is positioned to surpass Myspace, Twitter, and LinkedIn in US audience figures in 2012.

And the demographics of Google+ users are significantly different from those of other social networks, the study finds. While the likes of Facebook and LinkedIn mature as products, they attract a more mature demographic. But Google early adopters skew young, male and educated, with three men coming onboard for every two women (versus one man for every 1.2 women on Facebook); 43% of membership is 18 to 29 (31% for Facebook)’ 59% have a college degree (37% for Facebook), and 48% are single (33% of Facebook users).

And As Google+ gains followers, it is likely to negatively impact Facebook usage – 30% of Facebook users who already log on to Google+ plan on cutting down time spent on the Social Network this year.

“Google+ is tracing a path similar to Facebook’s initial growth – building excitement in a core group of early adopters,” says Michael Nardis, head of YouGov investment products. “For Facebook, it was college students. For Google+, that path is young, educated, single men who are heavy internet users.”

Exclusive Myspace Interview: Game

Posted in : News

(added few months ago!)

What Game Was Really Doing On Friday…
.
As we’ve already reported, Game got into some trouble last Friday when a tweet made from his phone advertising an internship caused hundreds of fans to unwittingly ring up the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, overwhelming its call system. We can vouch for Game though, because he was hanging out with us when all of that went down. If you don’t believe us we’ve posted a transcript and video of the interview as evidence, which you can consider them examples A and B. Case closed.

Exclusive Myspace Interview Game

What would you do if you could hijack Myspace for a day?
.
If I could hijack Myspace I would probably sell it and get my money. What’s Myspace worth, $100 million? I need that and then I’d go to Dubai and put it all on one on crap roll. I’d probably win. You know the odds of that? It’s crazy, you’ve got to turn it into a billion.
.
If you could do a secret show anywhere in the world where would it take place?
.
I would probably do it somewhere in the jungle; in the middle of the Congo with a war going on, that would be crazy. Bullets flying everywhere, fans getting hit, I mean you know, hey, that’s how it is, man. Do a couple shows and you might catch a bullet.
.
If you could get close to any artist dead or alive who would that be?
.
I would have loved to get close to Amy Winehouse. I would have liked to have been with her the last month of her life, just chilling and hanging out. I think I could have changed the outcome of that. I appreciate her and her music—and this is the first time I’m even saying anything about it—but I think Amy Winehouse was a really dope artist. To me she was classic.
.
What was your first concert?
.
My dad took me to the Coliseum and we saw L.A. Dream Team and I thought that was crazy. My dad had a ‘fro I had to pat down just to see [the stage] and I remember his outfit: He had on these Levis and they were cut and his whole thigh was out, striped tube socks that were green-and-yellow, some Diadoras and a fishnet Jamaican wifebeater. [Laughs.]
.
What’s the last great concert you went to?
.
A concert that featured myself, Snoop Dogg, Keri Hilson, Bow Wow, Busta Rhymes, Nelly, T-Pain, New Boyz and Taio Cruz. We were on the tour in Australia and that was first time I ever felt like hip-hop was what it’s supposed to be. It felt like hip-hop was a school and we took a class trip and I had a blast.
.
What’s in your playlist?
.
[Tyler, The Creator's] Goblin, Notorious B.I.G.’s Greatest Hits, my last mixtape. Oh I also have [a compilation album] that has a bunch of Marvin Gaye and Temptations songs [on it] and I keep [Nas'] Illmatic in the chamber. I don’t take it out, so my five-disc changer is really only four.
.
Who is your favorite artist and what is your favorite song?
.
My favorite artist is myself and my favorite song is probably “Dreams.”
.
You just put out a mixtape called Candy Coronas with DJ Skee. Is that album any indication of what The Red Album will sound like?
.
That ain’t shit like The Red Album. What happened is one day I was at home and i had no groceries, but you now how when you’re hungry you keep going back to the refrigerator as if something is going to appear in there but nothing ever does? I had one Corona and a bottle of Grenadine so I dumped out some of the Corona, put in some grenadine, shook it up and I created a masterpiece. Then we reached out to Corona and they thought it was a dope idea so we partnered up and now everyone’s walking around drinking Coronas.

No one hacked MySpace; it's down

Posted in : News

(added few months ago!)

MySpace's usual homepage was replaced this evening with a puzzling message, leading many (including this reporter) to initially believe the site may have been hacked. That apparently was not the case.

Visitors to the social network were greeted by a largely blank page topped with the browser title bar that read "All is wrong :(" where the MySpace name would normally appear. In the upper left of the normally vibrant page was the message: "We messed up our code so bad that even puppies and kittens may be in danger. Please turn back ...now." It was followed up with the message, "* Have your pet spayed or neutered" in the lower right.

A few minutes after being accessed by CNET and contacted for comment, MySpace's page was replaced with the message, "The service is unavailable," only to be replaced again with the original message. MySpace representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Some Twitter users suggested the site had been hacked, with at least one wondering whether the former social-networking high-flyer might have fallen victim to Anonymous. Members of the hactivist group recently vowed to take down the social-networking giant Facebook in November, but there is some suggestion that the group's members are not unified in this goal. Regardless, MySpace's name has not recently been named as a target for hacking.

But the former social-networking sensation has fallen on hard times lately, losing more and more ground to Facebook until it finally underwent a massive redesign that left it focusing on pop culture media-sharing for young users rather than attempting to be a universally appealing social network.

But that failed to assuage executives at News Corp., which after a very public expression of its dissatisfaction with the site's foundering performance, sold MySpace in June to digital-media company Specific Media for a reported $35 million.

Teens Post Sexy Pics On Myspace, Judge Says It’s OK

Posted in : News

(added few months ago!)

In the last year or so, we’ve seen multiple instances of minors being charged with crimes for sexting. Apparently, to some prosecutors, these racy pics constitute child pornography – even if the nude photos that the minors posses are photos of their own naked bodies.

Teens Post Sexy Pics On Myspace, Judge Says It’s OK

But what about sexually suggestive photos posted on social media sites? Can schools punish teens for things they post in their own time? A U.S. District Judge says no, as it violates a teen’s first amendment rights.

Back in 2009, two female students at a Fort Wayne Indiana high school were disciplined after photos emerged that they had posted on MySpace. The girls, aged 15 and 16, took photos at a sleepover that displayed “sexually suggestive poses with various props.” For instance, one photo saw the girls dressed in lingerie, pretending to lick penis-shaped lollipops.

The girls put these photos on MySpace, and according to the AP, their privacy settings only allowed friends to see them. Somehow, a parent at the school came across the photos and brought them to the district superintendent. The parent said that the photos were causing “divisiveness” among the school volleyball team, of which the girls were members.

Apparently, the photos also made their way around the school. Here is the punishment that followed: The principal suspended the two girls from the volleyball team, the choir and the cheerleading team. He also ordered the girls to complete three counseling sessions and made them apologize to an all-male coaching board. With the help of the Indiana ACLU, the two teens filed a lawsuit against the school district in October of 2009.

And now, the District Judge has ruled that the school violated the girls’ first amendment rights by disciplining them for the racy photos. From the ACLU of Indiana –

The Judge ruled that the photos could not be ruled “obscene.” He said they were “silly” but were intended to be humorous. If the girls would’ve taken nude photos, it might have been an entirely dfferent situation. For one, the pics probably wouldn’t have stayed on the site for very long, as MySpace like other social sites ban nudity.

Would the nude pics have been considered free speech in the context of the school code? It’s possible that criminal charges could have stemmed from nudes, just like the sexting cases. But could the school take disciplinary action over actions done off school property on the students’ own time?

So I guess the answer is yes, they could be disciplined. It looks like the key part of the Indiana case was the term “disruptive.” Apparently, lingerie pics with candy penises aren’t thought of as disruptive, but nude pics probably would be.

The question remains, however, where is the line drawn? What constitutes “obscene” and “disruptive?” What do you think? Let us know in the comments.

Murdoch lost quarter of a billion on Myspace

Posted in : News

(added few months ago!)

Rupert Murdoch might be happy that he has finally dumped the social notworking site Myspace on gyrating popular beat combo artist Justin Timberlake but it is finally getting revealed how much the outfit cost him.

News Corp has admitted in its  fiscal fourth quarter earnings report, that it lost $254 million on the sale of MySpace to Specific Media on June 29. This loss pushed net income for the company down by 22 percent. Murdoch bought MySpace in 2005 for $580 million.

The problem was that MySpace members defected to Facebook in droves and management at MySpace attempted to revamp the social network in 2010, but traffic continued to fall Murdoch tried to flog the social network up for sale in early 2011 but could not find someone who wanted to pay $100 million for it. Timberlake, and Specific Media picked up the site for  $35 million.
