According to the latest figures, Twitter - the social networking site most favoured by A listers - has overtaken MySpace in terms of visitor numbers. Data from ComScore cited in ITProPortal reveals that the content generation site had 1 million more unique visitors in August 2010 than its rival MySpace. The figures show that Twitter has grown by an astonishing 76 per cent over the last year, compared to MySpace’s 17 per cent decline.
Elevating Twitter to the third most popular social networking site and the 50th most visited site on the web, Twitter’s growth in the last couple of years is unsurpassed. From Hollywood stars Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore to national treasures like Stephen Fry, Twitter has become the en-vogue way to network.
The data also revealed that Facebook’s reign is far from over, with the site receiving 598 million unique visits per month, increasing its market share by over 50 per cent when compared to the same period last year.
Twitter remain fairly tight lipped on ComScore’s data, with Carolyn Penner at the company saying to Hexus, ”While we generally don’t comment on third-party statistics, the growth measured by others doesn’t surprise us. We’re seeing 370,000 new accounts a day.”
Recent scares such as the ‘onmouseover’ hole, where many users were affected by pop-up messages and links to third party porn sites, appear not to have slowed Twitter’s growth.
